Info
This image shows the Swansea wing Teifion Williams scoring a try at St Helen's, the Mumbles end against Group Captain "Ranji" Walker's XV. The match was played either in 1953, '54 or '55, Teifion having scored tries in all three of those matches. Ranji Walker's XV were a popular attraction in early season fixtures at St Helen's. The tours extended to north of England, the South Wales big clubs and over to Ireland, but they began at Swansea, organised by Walker and Swansea's Hon. Secretary Cliff Prosser. Teifion Williams played 204 matches for Swansea between 1951 and 1959, captaining the 1st XV in 1957-58. He played for Swansea against South Africa (1951), New Zealand (1953 6-6 draw) and Australia (1958). In an accompanying audio recording (AU001) Teifion, in later years, he talks about the image with his son. Teifion talks about Kingsley Amis, the famous novelist, who was in the crowd.
