This 'Guest Item' was brought to light on a visit to Gowerton RFC. It has a fascinating story behind it, linking rugby in California directly with the Gowerton Rugby Club. This story involves a Gowerton man in California and his brother back in Gowerton, South Wales. To explain the story accurately, we have asked our friend Thia Markson to use her rugby contacts in California where she lives.
The attached PDF file is her rendition of the story with added detail from the investigations of Placement Student Joe Mortimer, in his year at St Helen's Archive and his visit to Gowerton RFC. We are grateful to members of Gowerton RFC and to their club Secretary Stephen Howells for access to this historic jersey and for their valuable help in establishing its story and relevance to rugby in South Wales.
