Info
This hand coloured portrait of Swansea and Wales forward George Hayward dates from 1908, when he gained the first of his five Welsh caps against Scotland at St Helen's, Swansea on 1st February 1908. Wales narrowly won the match by 6 - 5. Hayward went on to play in the wins over France, Ireland and Australia that year, becoming a Triple Crown winner. He played in the win over England in January 1909, his last Welsh cap. George played three times for Glamorgan County, including against Australia, who he also opposed when Swansea beat them in December 1908, thus he played three times against the tourists. George Hayward was an integral part of the Swansea team who reclaimed the Welsh Championship in 1907-08. A versatile and very fast back row forward, George often played as a centre when required by his club, and even on the wing for Swansea against South Africa when the All Whites defeated them in 1912. He moved to Wigan in the English Northern Union in December 1913 for a huge signing on fee of £155, the highest paid out for a Welsh forward at the time. Kindly donated by the family of George Hayward.
