Description
Photograph on postcard, B&W. Coloured by hand. George Hayward in Wigan FC jersey.
Info
This image, coloured in by hand, is of Swansea and Wales forward George Hayward in his Wigan Rugby (Northern Union) club jersey. It has been suggested that it is Hayward in his Wales Trial jersey, as he appears to wear either a Wales cap or a Wales Trial cap from 1908. But hen he played in the December 1907 trial he was on the 'Whites' team and not the 'Stripes' team. So we must assume he wore his Wales cap for effect, having recently joined the Wigan club and not yet having a club cap from that team. Hayward played two seasons for Wigan, appearing in 58 matches and scoring 16 tries. His transfer fee of £155 was the highest for a Welsh forward moving to a Northern Union club at the time (December 1913). Kindly donated to the Archive by the family of George Hayward.
