Score card, Glamorgan County CC v Australia at St Helen's, 1-4 August 1953

Info

This is a score card from the Glamorgan County CC's match with the touring Australians on 1st to 4th August 1953, played at the St Helen's Ground, Swansea. This match at St Helen's ended in a draw. Glamorgan scored 201 and 188/7. Australia scored 386. With time running out after rain delayed the last day's start, Glamorgan had avoided the follow-on but there was no time for the tourists to bat again. A crowd of 25,000 was recorded, many saying that it was more like 30,000. Highlights of the match were the 2nd innings of partnership of County skipper Wilf Wooller (71 n/o) and Len Muncer (56 r/0); their partnership yielded 125 runs, the third highest partnership against the 1953 touring Australians. The other stand-out performance was the superb batting display by the young Australian Neil Harvey hitting his 10th century of the season. His innings ended on 180 when Gilbert Parkhouse took the catch off W E Jones' bowling. The crowd were treated to some fine cricket and a great escape from Glamorgan, whose situation looked bad at the end of day two on Monday. Glamorgan captain Wilf Wooller told reporters at the end of play "We will not lose by an innings", which was looking likely, at 62/6. But the county team made good his promise and a draw was a just result to an exciting match at St Helen's. The huge crowd brought in a Glamorgan County record of just under £3,000, beating the £2912 realised from the match against West Indies in 1950. The original owner of the score card has filled in the match details almost to the end of the second day's play.
