Info

This collection of letters represents the reactions of the pupils at Sketty Primary School, Swansea, following their visit to St Helen's on Wednesday 4th December 2024. The pupils had created a class project based upon the Swansea v South Africa rugby match at St Helen's on 15th November 1969. There were anti-apartheid demonstrations at the match, which became known as "the battle of Swansea". this formed the basis of the pupils' project, which explored the phenomenon of apartheid, its consequences and how the opponents of apartheid were able to express their objections. The pupils gave a visual and aural presentation of their project, which included reporductions of contemporary anti-apartheid posters that they had made themselves. In return, the Archive Team at St Helen's Archive were able to bring out various artefacts that followed the story of discrimination in sport. A short talk on why archiving was so important was also made and a "find it" quiz on items on display. A short tour of the St Helen's ground was also included. This was the second visit of a class from Sketty Primary School to St Helen's with the project. The letters collected here represent the thoughts and impressions of the children following a successful morning in partnership with the St Helen's Archive.
