Plaque of the Kidwelly Kidwelly Town Council. The Kidwelly Rugby Club (est: 1880) played v Swansea at Parc Stephens, Kidwelly Saturday 12th December 1985 in the WRU Schweppes Cup (2nd round) and the Town plaque was presented to Swansea RFC after the match, which was won by Swansea by 13 - 6.
The legend of the Kidwelly Cat is shrouded in folklore and mystery. Some say it was found to be the sole survivor when inhabitants returned to the town after the ravages of the devastating plague of 1349-51, thus symbolising 'Hope'. It may also be a name extenuated from the name of the town, the old spelling being Catwelli. But the emblem has long represented the town as a symbol of hope.
