Info

A reproduction of a woodcut image of the Swansea RFC 1st XV in the 1886-1887 season, printed in the Illustrated Sports and Dramatic News publication of 16th April 1887 p119. The image shows the successful Swansea 1st XV with the South Wales Challenge Cup, which they won on 19th February 1887 at Rodney Parade, Newport by defeating Llanelli by 21 points to one point. The personnel in the image as as follows: Back Standing (L to R): Bill Gwynn, W H Jones, George Bowen, George Lockwood Morris, Dai Morgan, Sam Goldsworthy (Umpire), Tom Williams, W H Towers, John Meredith, Billy Bowen; Seated (L to R): W H Howell, Dai Gwynn (vice-capt.), George James, Teddy Bishop, Evan Richards (capt.), Teddy Thorogood. The subtitle erroneously dates the cup victory as "1886". Swansea's 1887 cup win was their second, they also having secured the trophy in 1880. This latter win marked the last time the Challenge Cup was contested for by senior clubs until the WRU introduced the Welsh Challenge Cup in 1971. See also PH224
