Info
This is a rare photograph of the early Swansea Hockey Team, taken some time in 1898. It was presented to the collection by A.L. Bertie Perkins, who was grandson to C.H. Perkins, long-time SC&FC secretary and a keen cricketer and hockey player. In his letter to the club (see: OT146) Bertie Perkins identifies Dr. Edgar Reid as the team captain in the image and Bertie's grandfather C H Perkins "on his right". Also identifiable in the image is R S (Reginald) Jenkin of the Swansea rugby 1st XV 1893-95. Reginald was the brother of Swansea captain and Wales cap A M (Arthur) Jenkin. The hockey team captain Dr. Edgar Reid was a former Swansea RFC scrum-half with the 1st & 2nd XVs (1884-89). Reid was also a first class cricketer for Swansea CC and Glamorgan County CC. An all round sportsman, Edgar Reid was capped by Wales at hockey (1899 v England) and later refereed hockey matches at club level. He helped found the Pennard Golf Club as well. This image can be accurately dated to 1898 as the season when Reid captained the Swansea HC.
