This cup was presented to Swansea RFC following the match between Swansea and Newcastle Falcons at St Helen's on 19th September 1998 at the start of the 1998-99 rugby season. The match was billed as the 'Champions of Champions' match as Swansea had won the Welsh Heineken League title in 1997-98, achieving the least League losses in top flight history (two). Newcastle Falcons had won the Allied Dunbar Premiership title in England in 1997-98 in their first season after being promoted to the English top flight. The match at St Helen's was won 26 - 14 by Swansea.
