Following the successful tour by New Zealand 's Matamata School to Wales in December 1974, Swansea Schools Rugby Union (SSRU) were invited on a reciprocal tour in 1976, from 12th to 15th August. To return the hospitality enjoyed at Swansea, the 33 members of the SSRU touring party were billeted in the Matamata area. A very successful tour followed where the SSRU team played against W. Auckland Schools, Thames Valley XV, St Stephen's College, Rotorua High School, Matamata College, New Plymouth Schools and Christchurch Schools, for whom future All Blacks coach Steve Hansen played at centre.
