Description

Swansea RFC Centenary tie pin badge

Info

This tie pin badge was one of thousands sold in the club shop to supporters, marking the Centenary of Swansea RFC as a Rugby Union organisation - the club having been formed under Association Football rules in 1872. The tie pin badges were sold by the Swansea & District Supporters' Club during the 1973-74 season at 20 pence each. The design of the Osprey in flight was commissioned by the club from internationally renowned Welsh artist Andrew Vicari (1932-2016). His Osprey design was used during the Centenary season as a club motif and appeared on all manner of club related material, most notably on the white jersey on match days. It was the first time a motif of any sort had appeared on the Swansea RFC jersey and it remained on use into the early 1990s. It was revived an a stylised form to represent Swansea RFC in the Semi-Pro era from 2003.
