Info
This is the commemorative jersey designed and worn by Swansea RFC for their ‘Sesquicentennial’ (150th) season in 2022-23. It was especially commissioned by the Swansea RFC 150th Anniversary Steering Committee and was produced for the club by the Umbro company. It represents a replica of the earliest confirmed jersey worn by the club in 1872.
The cardinal red (more nearly, a purple hue) is known to have been the colour of the early jersey and the club badge is an exact reconstruction of that from an 1880 photograph where the cardinal red jerseys were worn. As no other feature would have been present on the original, the club endeavoured to replicate this by avoiding sponsor logos (a regular home and away jersey were also produced to comply with sponsorship contracts by the club).
The dedication on the back, beneath the collar reads: “The All Whites. This jersey was designed to honour all those who have worn the famous All Whites jersey and the many who have gone on to the red of Wales and the British & Irish Lions over the past 150 years."
Only a limited number of these jerseys were produced for players only and no replicas were made available. This example of the players' jersey is one of the very few produced. Swansea abandoned the cardinal red in 1884 for the white they have worn ever since, the 150th season excepted.
See JY224 for the 1880 team photograph featuring the early jersey.
