The 1880 article describes how Mr James Andrews has taken a photograph of the Swansea First Fifteen, winners of the South Wales Challenge Cup (SWCC) in 1880. The second cutting is a later illustration of the same image that has allowed us for the first time, to positively identify all the personnel in the 1880 photograph. But there is more interest in the image. The SWCC trophy has clearly been superimposed. This was done by Mr Andrews as the Newport club were still disputing their first round loss to Swansea and as 1879 cup holders still had possession of the trophy and had refused to relinquish it. So the staged image you see was achieved by Mr Andrews in his photographic studio in Victoria Road, Swansea - an early example of photo manipulation! (See: PH224)
