Abstract
This commemorative clock and columns was presented to Swansea forward Dai 'Mumbles' Davies to mark swansea's 'Invincible' season of 1904-05 in which he played. The record for the season was: played 31, won 27, drawn 4, lost nil. This achievement was the culmination of a series of successful seasons during which Swansea were Welsh Champions six seasons out of seven from 1898-99 to 1904-05 and runners-up in 1902-03. Dai 'Mumbles' Davies acquired his soubrique as another forward called Dai Davies was prominent in the Swansea pack at this time. So one became 'Mumbles' and the other 'port Tennant'. 'Mumbles' Davies played for Swansea from 1900 to 1907 and in doing so was part of 4 Championship winning Swansea sides (1900-01, 1901-02, 1903-04, 1904-05). he was fast enough on his feet to cover at full-back in a match against Llanelli in 1902. Davies also toured to Paris with Swansea in 1904, when Swansea were victorious by 18 - 0. A physically robust player, Davies was also known as a successful boxer in his day. He also kept pigeons. He was a plasterer by trade. His grandson John Davies played at centre for Swansea in the 1960s and 1970s and his great grandson Lee Davies played at outside half in the late 1990s for Swansea. The commemorative clock was presented to swansea RFC by John Davies in January 2020.
