Abstract

This photograph, along with PH220 illustrates the match at Cardiff Arms Park between Cardiff and Swansea on 15th october 1949. A crowd of 35,000 saw Swansea take cardiff's ground record which, apart from a defeat to the Barbarians on 16th April 1949, had stood since they lost to Llanelli way back on 28th April 1947! This encounter between Cardiff and Swansea ended in a 18 - 12 win for Swansea. Bryn Evans, Alun Thomas and Len Davies scored tries for Swansea with Len Davies converting all three. Alun Thgomas also dropped a goal. The four Cardiff try scorers were Bill Tamplin, Dai Jones, Jack Matthews and Terry Cook. This image possibly shows Jack Matthews scoring with Swansea's outside-half Alun Thomas in pursuit. The Cardiff player far right is almost certainly Bleddyn Williams.
