Abstract
This is a photographic print of an original oil painting that was presented to Brigadier Hugh Llewelyn Glyn Hughes C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., F.R.C.G.P. "Hughie" as he was known in the rugby world was President of the Barbarians Rugby Club from 1955 until his death in 1973, having been Treasurer since 1928. Hughes had played for the Barbarians as early as the 1913 Easter tour and turned out 20 times for them on 9 tours. His great lengthy of service to the 'Babaas' was marked in 1973 by the presentation to him by the Welsh clubs the Babaas toured to, of a specially commissioned oil painting of himself, typically dressed in blazer and club tie. Copies of this painting were given the donor clubs of Penarth, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport and this is the copy given to Swansea RFC. A brass plaque on the original frame was engraved: "Brigadier H.L. Glyn Hughes, President of the Barbarian Football Club. A print of the original presented to 'Hughie' by Penarth, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport RFC's in recognition of his 6oth Anniversary with the Barbarians. April 23rd 1973." Swansea first played against the Barbarians on 9th April 1900, winning the encounter 11 - 0. They continued as regular opponents during the Easter holidays until 1994 when a 43 - 31 win ended the series of matches. Many Swansea players have turned out for the 'Babaas' since Swansea and Wales wing Bryn Lewis in 1912.
