Abstract

This is the Swansea RFC team that beat Australia 9 - 8 on 26th November 1966 at St Helen's. Back-row Mike Thomas (captain) scored a try, Brian Diment at outside-half dropped a goal and full-back Stuart Ferguson kicked a penalty. The win was hard won, with Mike Thomas in particular coming in for some rough handling which took him off the field for treatment for ten minutes. Swansea won only 18 of their 48 matches this season and the Australians played almost a full test lineup in their team that day as they were playing Wales the next week. A curiosity of the image is that Mike Thomas was absent when it was taken and had a stand in in the team photo. his head was later superimposed on the image by photographer Jack Thomas, explaining the slightly odd angle of his head in this image. Back Row (L to R): D Weaver, G Atherton, B Mainwaring, J H Clifford, D Davies, D I E Bebb, S Ferguson. 2nd Row (L to R): R Thomas, D Jones, S Davies (Vice-captain), M Thomas (captain), M Evans, B Diment. Front Row (L to R): John Davies, D C T Rowlands.
