Abstract
This Welsh Championship medal from the 1898-99 season was awarded to Swansea and Wales centre George Davies. The medal is hugely significant as this season saw Swansea end as ‘Premier Team’ of Wales for the first time since 1890-91 and marked the beginning of the club’s ‘Golden Era’. 28 wins were recorded, with 3 draws and just 2 defeats from the 33 matches played. George Davies was one of 7 rugby playing brothers from Llandeilo. An elusive runner with a deadly side step, this season he scored 14 tries, 2 cons and 2 drop goals. He won 9 Welsh caps from 1900 to 1905 and was an ever present member of the deadly Swansea back line from 1896 to 1906. The medal was acquired and kindly gifted by the All Whites Former Players’ Association.
