Abstract
This French international jersey was worn by Jean Barthe in the match against Wales at the Stade Colombes, Paris on 23rd March 1957. Wales won the match 19 - 13 and Swansea and 'Lions' back-row forward John Faull scored one of the Welsh tries. He swapped jerseys with Barthe after the match and later presented this jersey to Swansea RFC. A very successful player in both Union and League codes, Jean Barthe won an impressive 26 French caps as a Lourdes player in the Union code between 1954 and 1958, including the French tour to South Africa in 1958. Switching codes in 1959 enjoyed even greater success when he joined Roanne XIII and and won France's League Championship with them in 1960 as well as the Lord Derby Cup (1962). Moving to the Saint-Gaudens club in 1963 Barthe won 2 more League Championships and later, with the carcassonne club, won 2 more Lord Derby Cups. He won a total of 22 French caps in the Rugby League code. Jean Barthe also captained the French national Rugby League team in the 1960 RL World Cup.
