Abstract

This 1974 ‘Lions’ No8 jersey was worn by Mervyn Davies on the ‘Invincible’ tour of South Africa. Davies played in all 4 test matches and 9 of the midweek matches. The ‘Lions’ matched and overcame the renowned physicality of the Springboks to stamp their own brand of running rugby on the series. they won all 18 midweek games and the first three test matches, the first time the ‘Lions’ had won a series in South Africa since 1896. The last test ended controveritally when the referee disalowed a Fergus Slattery try, allowing the Springboks to avoid a whitewash with a draw. This jersey was kindly gifted to Swansea RFC by Mervyn.
